by Bryan Jakes

Fishing from a boat can just make the whole sport that much more enjoyable.

The fishing sport and the boating recreation activity are becoming more and more popular for people to take off up to the lake or down the river to enjoy their favorite fishing hole.

Take note of these safety tips so you can make your boating event more enjoyable. Do this before you set sail to get in some real fishing.

1. Never use an engine on your boat that is overpowered. Too much power on a small boat can be a real hazard to your safety and others around you.

2. Slowdown when you are near other boats. Don’t operate too close to swimmers and other fishermen. Make sure you pay attention to any warning signs that are posted on the waterways. Treat the waterways just like you do the highway. Drive safely and courteously.

3. The position of your boat, while fishing can make a safe and pleasurable fishing experience. Orient your boat to follow the outline of a point, matching the angle for the best cast. For each situation and location you would need to position your boat differently. Always keep track of where your boat is so that it can be seen by other boaters traveling through the area.

4. Make sure you double check your checklist and have all of your fishing and boating needs before you leave the dock. The checklist should include enough fuel and battery power to last you your whole trip and especially make sure you have an anchor.

5. Check your safety equipment, make sure that you have a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, flares, at least one oar, and a life vest for each occupant.

6. As you drive your boat, make sure you pay attention to where you’re going always have your flashers and graphs prepared before you set out, this way you won’t be distracted. Make sure you are paying attention to people that might need your help or other approaching boats. Keep focused on those around you, just like you would in a car.

Your fishing and boating experience is sure to be a success if you follow these safety rules. Once you’ve experienced a nice outing, you will have the confidence to come back for more.
