Black Legion: Plant employee Bogart, disheartened after losing a promotion to a colleague named “Dombrowski,” becomes engaged with a Ku Klux Klan type group. This commanding and still pertinent drama is well made. Cast includes Humphrey Bogart, Erin O’Brien-Moore, Dick Foran, Ann Sheridan, Joe Sauers (Sawyer), Helen Flint, Dickie Jones, and Henry Brandon. Believe in Me: Donovan moves to a tiny Oklahoma town in 1964 to take a teaching job, although when he arrives he learns he’s been assigned to coach the girls basketball team. What’s more, the girls have no self respect and little help from the school. Genuine heartland tale ascends above its recognizable underdog recipe. Donovan and Mathis as his supportive spouse are first rate. Cast includes Jeffrey Donovan, Samantha Mathis, Bruce Dem, Bob Gunton, Heather Matarazzo, Alicia Lagano, and Chris Ellis. Number One with a Bullet: Carradine and Williams do well in this somewhat normal action movie where we have aggressive investigators out to dethrone a drug kingpin. Cast includes Robert Carradine, Billy Dee Williams, Valerie Bertinelli, Peter Graves, Doris Roberts, and Bobby DiCicco. (101 minutes, 1987)
Raise the Red Lantern: Striking reenactment of the life of a young concubine in 1920’s China, as university educated gal (Gong Li) is sent to feudal nobleman’s palatial home to become his latest spouse. The relations between her and her predecessors, all of whom live on the premises. The interaction amid the ladies, the servants, and their master are brilliantly played out. The film provides an exceptional view of sex, dependability, and captivity during that time. Cast includes Gong Li, Ma Jingwu, He Caifei, Cao Cuifeng, Jin Shuyuan, Kong Lin, Ding Weimin, and Cui Zhihgang. (125 minutes, 1991)
Talladega Nights: The Battle o Ricky Bobby: This is a crazy comedy with NASCAR racing as its platform. Ricky Bobby has become one of the best drivers in NASCAR. When an accident puts him out of action, he loses his nerve for racing. With nothing but racing in his life, Ricky Bobby must find a way to overcome his fear, and return to his championship form.
Unbreakable: Elijah Price has lived his whole life with a horrible bone condition. His bones are so weak that they shatter with the slightest jolt. From his reading of comics, he is convinced that there is an opposite of him living in the world. The story is of his search to find this “unbreakable” man.
Life With Father: Powerful adaptation of a long running Broadway play by Howard Lindsay and Russell Crusoe based on Clarence Night’s tale of growing up in turn-of-the-century NYC with his admiring although offbeat dad. This is utterly admirable, and a handsome production also. The Screen-play is by Donald Ogden Stewart. Cast includes William Powell, Irene Dunne, Elizabeth Taylor, Edmund Gwenn, ZaSu Pitts, Jimmy Lydon, and Matlin Milner. (118 minutes, 1947)
